I watched and listened to the events in Egypt with great interest and awe. Watching the scenes play out in the public square and hearing the “Political Pundits” and members of the political, intellectual and economic class try to predict the outcome of what they did not even understand, reminded me of how truly hidden the genesis of events are from the physical senses. Cable channels who have to fill a void twenty-four hours a day found it difficult to find people with any real creditability. Still; they couldn’t go on television and say they did not know, so instead they guessed and argued all points of view, with the hope that perhaps at the end they could retain some credibility. It was interesting to me as someone who is politically conservative to hear the garbage put forth from people whose reasoning I generally trust and the other side was just as incoherent. Even the President with all the resources at his disposal could not find firm footing and ended up with egg on his face on occasion. The point is, real change takes place in the realm of the invisible. Somewhere beyond our vision someone knew exactly what was going to happen and knows what will happen now.
Now there are many lessons to be learned from this transformation taking place in the Middle East. The first and obvious is that change takes time. It took generations for Israel to come out of Egypt, generations of prayer to end the African slave trade and generations for the Iron curtain to come down. On the surface nothing seemed to be happening in Egypt for a long time, so when change begun to manifest itself, the ‘powers that be’ fought desperately to maintain the existing order but could not, despite their best efforts.
The events in Egypt also taught me that change brings responsibility when it is finally manifested. In the case of freedom many people like Israel in the Bible and the modern African American experience, who begged and pleaded for change; are often not prepared for the responsibilities which come with it. This is why God seems to take such a long time, he has to wait for our maturity to catch up with our desire. This is the new challenge for the nation of Egypt now that their defiance to the old order has succeeded. Are they ready for the challenge of self-governance?
Finally; change clarifies our values and brings into manifestation what we truly desire and believe. Under the tyranny of any situation where options and choices are limited, human nature develops a survival mindset. This mindset is geared only toward self-preservation, doing only what keeps one out of trouble. Yet real values are expressed in positive and bold action based of desired outcome. When you have the means to do whatever you want, what you choose to do expresses your values. This is why God insists on our right to choose because it is choice which clearly clarifies who we are and where we stand.
4. Are you truly who you believe yourself to be? Often, we believe that where we are is not where we want to be or should be. Perhaps it’s time to consider the full picture because while change takes place in the realm of the invisible, so too does maturity, wisdom and favor!
