Just Peace
By Friday morning all he wanted was a little peace! His week had been filled with one disturbance after another. Brian had always looked forward to coming home and sitting in front of the television and winding down for a few minutes. He would follow that up by a leisurely meal but this week was different. He was ailing physically from un-going health concerns and falling behind in his bills. This made his evening ritual a little more important to him but here too, there was no peace.
On Monday his visiting aunt decided to fix him something he liked, but his wife decided to prepare something she had a taste for as well. Since she did not finish on time, he ate the food from his aunt but it disturbed his peace. The next day, Uncle Bob was supposed to fix the coon he brought on the visit, but he found Brian’s wife fixing her unfinished meal from the day before he was ready to get going, so he changed his mind. They had visitors that day so Brian volunteered to eat leftovers from the day before. His wife informed him he really did not want her cooking and was using the situation to get to the leftovers so he ate what was set before him. On Wednesday he came home with a nervous stomach which lasted the rest of the week. When they called him to the dinner table he asked to eat later, hoping also that this would also lend itself to a peaceful meal at last. However the people in the house objected to his break in habit.
On Thursday his illness returned but he failed to inform his wife on time. She had called to say she was on the way home with a take-out dinner. Normally Brian would have set the table, make the salad, see to the drinks and inform the household. But since he was wrapped up in bed with a chill he thought he deserved time off that evening. His wife knowing she had called ahead was shocked that he was not ready when she walked in the house and made her displeasure clear. Brian got up crowned with a nasty attitude and did what was needed to make the meal work. So on Friday morning, he was tired, wishing he was single, and still having problems at work. He had started the week with a lot of ambition and hope, maybe even moving forward. But now on Friday morning he just wanted peace!
Now I was thinking about this story after reading Numbers 6: 24-26, which speaks of the blessing committed by God, to the Priest, for the people of God. It says-
The Lord bless and protect you;
the Lord make His face shine on you,
and be gracious to you;
the Lord look with favor on you
and give you peace.
